The Man at the Head of the Class

Professor Walter Wang

Over the many years that Professor Walter Wang has taught Mathematics at Baruch, his dedication to his students is legendary. When Baruch alums comment about him, they always rave about his “belief in them.” Walter has now chosen to support the current and future students of Baruch by creating a math prize for graduating seniors. Walter and his wife, Debra, support the awarding of the math prize through their annual giving to Baruch and have decided to supplement their lifetime giving with a gift in their will for the continuation of this prize in Mathematics.

The Power of Support

Professor Wang tells the story of meeting with alumni who many years earlier had won the Baruch Math Department Prize. The students told Walter how winning it encouraged each of them to excel in both career and life, and that it was still an honor each of them cherishes.

“Award-winning is always fun for the recipient of the honor but even greater is the thrill of award-giving! I can’t tell you how exciting it is to have created the math prize, watch students vie for it, be involved in the process of supporting and encouraging them all as they go on to successful lives. I would encourage every department in the College to establish a prize for their discipline. The joy of giving coupled with seeing your students excel is truly an enriching experience.”
